This is a loaded word more than most others. I only want to spend a couple cents in it now.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as:
- The condition of having or being composed of differing elements
- Especially: the inclusion of different types of people (such as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization
- an instance of being composed of differing elements or qualities : an instance of being diverse.
But when people use ‘diversity’ in conversation today, they focus on that Especially in 1. Diversity of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, etc.
That’s nice, but what ever happened to diversity of thoughts and ideas?
When companies hire based on diversity now, they want everyone to look different, even if they all think the same.
Stating or considering that a homogeneous culture could have diversity of thought is now an -ism (racism, sexism, etc). (Someone was offended by that notion, I can sense it.) And yet every empire of the past, (including ours) was build by a singular group of people and then expanded.
Diversity of thought is great for growth. The prioritization of only diversity of appearance, for appearance sake, is not diversity, though. It’s idiocy.
